The ISMM and BMMS XIV World Congress on Mountain Medicine: Registration

The International Society of Mountain Medicine and the British Mountain Medicine Society are pleased to invite you to the XIV World Congress on Mountain Medicine, taking place in Hathersage, UK.

We look forward to welcoming you to the congress on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th May, followed by a range of optional outdoor and social activities designed to help you make the most of your visit to the Peak District.

The congress features an exciting, action-packed programme, including lectures, practical workshops, and hands-on sessions held both indoors and quite literally out on the hill. You’ll be able to personalise your experience by selecting your preferred workshops and choosing whether to take part in additional outdoor and social activities. Please note due to the range of options available, the registration process is detailed and may take some time to complete. We recommend allowing approximately 20–30 minutes to register.

This workshop is being held in a village at the centre of traditional British Gritstone Climbing. There is a great tradition of mountain literature and many of the authors have been doctors with an interest in altitude physiology. We hope to share these traditions in a group discussion with a panel of active climbers who are involved in mountain literature as authors, medical historians, publishers, book sellers including the 2025 Boardman Tasker award winner. We are hoping that audience members  will share sections of mountain related books that have inspired their medicine and/or their climbing.

Outdoor Activities

You and your guests can take the opportunity to make the most of what the beautiful Peak District has to offer. In partnership with PureOutdoor, we'll be putting on a range of group outdoor activities throughout the week. 

Please be aware, the activities taking place on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will clash with the main congress programme. However, any guests that you have with you are still more than welcome to book onto and attend these activities.

Kindly be advised that each activity is subject to a minimum participant requirement. In the event that your selected activity does not go ahead, a full refund will be provided.

A guided walk from Hathersage - Monday

A guided walk from Hathersage taking in the outstanding Peak District scenery that surrounds the village. The exact itinerary will be selected on the day on the basis of the prevailing weather conditions but you will be led by one of our experienced local guides who will be able to introduce you to some of the history, geography and geology of the landscape. Expect some moderate hills and to cover up to 10 miles during the day. All participants will need to be dressed suitably for a day in the hills including warm layers, a waterproof jacket and sturdy footwear along with a sun hat and sunscreen if the forecast looks like it will be necessary. Don't forget to bring a packed lunch and drink to keep you moving through the day.

If you're looking to try rock climbing for the first time or have some experience of indoor climbing, then our Outdoor Rock Climbing Taster Day is perfect for you! The Peak District has some of the best rock climbing spots in the UK, and our experienced instructors can help you find just the right level of challenge, whether you're a bit nervous about heights or ready to push yourself to the limit. Don't worry if you've never climbed before, because we'll teach you all you need to know to stay safe. After that, it's all about getting as much hands-on experience as possible. With a maximum group size of 6 you are guaranteed a lot of attention and guidance from your instructor who will help you build your confidence and show you how to climb efficiently, so you can achieve more than you ever thought possible. We will provide all the required technical equipment so participants just need to be dressed appropriately for time in the hills including warm layers, a waterproof jacket and sturdy footwear.  Don't forget to bring a packed lunch and drink to keep you moving through the day.

Beginner Caving Day (Horizontal)

Take your first underground steps into a Peak District cave system and learn about its creation over 300 million years, discover beautiful formations and fossils as well as evidence of mining dating back centuries. With vast chambers, roaring waterfalls and serpentine passages the caves and mines of the Peak District await your next adventure! Our Beginner Caving Day offers an ideal first taste of underground adventure. During the day you'll visit up to 2 local cave systems. This activity is suitable for everyone, the systems we visit are mostly walking sized with some sections of stooping or hands-and-knees crawling. Each trip lasts 2 to 3 hours and the level of challenge is tailored to you. Before setting out you'll be kitted out with an oversuit, wellies, kneepads, helmet and lamp and we'll make a plan to be safe underground, including taking a detailed look at the weather. Participants will need to be dressed in warm non-cotton clothing such as fleece tops and thermal leggings and to bring along plenty of snacks and a drink.

Right Way in a Day Navigation Course

A one day practical Peak District Navigation Course geared to giving you a taste of the skills you need to get out exploring the tracks and trails of the UK. Aimed at beginners wanting to start self-guided walks in the hills, our Right Way In A Day Navigation Course offers a good introduction to the fundamentals of navigation. You will develop knowledge in the theory and use of maps, grid references, scales and rights of way and all the practical tools for navigation including the use of a compass to set the map and check direction. We will provide the required maps and compasses so participants just need to be dressed appropriately for time in the hills including warm layers, a waterproof jacket and sturdy footwear.  Don't forget to bring a packed lunch and drink to keep you moving through the day.

Adventure Caving Day (Vertical)

A true adventure for experienced or keen beginner cavers. Head deeper underground exploring, abseiling, traversing and climbing in some of the Peak District’s finest vertical caves. Learn the techniques for safe and efficient vertical caving in some of the most impressive and exciting cave systems in the UK. This is a step beyond the beginner caving experience; using specialist ladders and safety line techniques we will delve deeper and go further to explore the fascinating local cave and mine systems. Descend into the cave using abseils and traverses along high ledges then, after exploring the heart of the cave, return to the surface, climbing our roll up caving ladders. On all ascents and descents you will have a safety line attached to you, helping you up and keeping you safe. With a motivated team you can reach the deepest parts of the Peak district and this is the perfect follow up to our Beginner Caving Day. Mountain Biking Taster Day

Our Mountain Biking Taster Day covers the core trail skills and is ideal for either complete beginners or for those wanting to progress their mountain bike experience from moderate off-road tracks to more technical intermediate trails. Our experienced guides and instructors will cover the fundamental trail riding skills of body position, footwork, line choice and cornering to get you tackling natural trail features both confidently and safely. We'll also cover the basics of bike set-up, maintenance and safety to ensure you have the right knowledge to head out and further progress by yourself. The Peak District has some of the best and most iconic 'natural' mountain biking in the country with a range of terrain from gentle flowy tracks to rugged and remote trails. With the help and guidance of our knowledgeable local instructors we'll get you riding the right trails in the right conditions to progress your riding whilst ensuring you have a fantastic day out in the hills. Participants will need to bring their own suitable mountain bike or arrange to hire a bike from our neighbouring business, The Bike Garage, where a full day rental costs £30. Everyone will also need to be dressed appropriately for a day of riding in the hills including a spare warm layer, waterproof jacket, snacks, drink and a small rucksack to put everything in

We'll be offering an off road parking option in a neighbouring field as parking in Hathersage can be limited. This will be charged at £5 per day.
